Our Story
How the Hillsdale Hymn Singing Club got started.
Written by Stephen
The Beginning
The Hillsdale Hymn Singing Club started as a group of students occasionally gathering to sing hymns. I wasn’t even a Christian yet, but I liked singing hymns because I liked the music. When I became a Christian, God gave me a new heart that loved to sing praises to Him. Occasional meetings turned into weekly gatherings where we met in our dorm to sing hymns that we liked together. Several people mentioned that they missed that their churches rarely sang hymns anymore.
Our Growth
As God continued to open my eyes and grow me, I realized how rich with Scripture many hymns were, and wanted to share this with other people. I started a club (under the advice of Chief) and acquired funds to buy hymnals. We started doing hymn studies to try to understand better what words we were singing, how they connected with Scripture, and what they taught us about God through these connections. We started doing performances for underserved communities in the local area (food pantry etc.).
Continuing Journey
Over time, God taught us how to better study hymns in light of Scripture. We expanded to do additional events like theology of singing workshops, fellowship events, and performances for various people. We’ve seen God use this ministry in many ways, and we’re grateful for the stories of impact we’ve witnessed.
